Sample Sale Report Update: Simon Spurr

I stopped by quickly during lunch today at the Simon Spurr sale to check out the price reductions (for full price list scroll to the bottom).  A lot of the merchandise has moved since I last visited but there's still plenty available.  Sizing has dwindled down (denim is mostly between 30-32) and suits are for the most part 48.

Simon Spurr outerwear is now $450, leather $750, shirts $110 (2 for $190), denim $100, polos $75 and tees are now $35.  SPURR outerwear is $195, leather is $350, shirts $60, denim $45, polos $25 and tees are now $18.
Some items are priced at the same value for both lines:  suits from both SPURR and Simon Spurr are $750 and all sportscoats are going for $450.
They are also offering volume discounts on top of the reduced prices so if you end up picking up a few things don't forget to ask! Sale ends tomorrow (May 2 at 6pm).

Sample Sale Report: Simon Spurr

If you were as dissapointed as I was in the Jil Sander sample sale - head on over to the Simon Spurr sale where there's PLENTY of amazing gear - all at around 70% off retail.  Similar to Jil Sander with Raf Simons exiting the label, Simon Spurr recently did the same thing, so items from Spring 12 on sale are one of the last collections designed by Spurr himself.

First off, the space is massive compared to previous sales.  It's held in the same location but has more than double the space (the office used to be partitioned off) and there's tons of merchandise.  Whether you're in the market for denim, blazers, outerwear, or shirts, this sale has you covered.  There's no coat/bag check, a couple rooms for you to change in, one giant mirror and the sale is organized really well by type of clothing and by size.  Sizing is generally available across the board with the majority of items coming in M /48.

Simon Spurr makes the BEST pair of denim hands down (in my opinion).  It's a straight leg pant with a slim leg that just works.  It's not loud, its not super skinny and flattering all around.  All Simon Spurr denim is going for $125 (retails for about $375-$495) and Spurr denim is going for $75 (retails for about $198-$225).  Again in terms of sizing for pants, there's plenty to choose from and lots of colors including a couple brighter options (red and blue shown above).

There's one table with a few knitwear pieces and some polos.  The polo shirts are going for $95 (retails for $345) and are made out a super lightweight fabric that have taped seams which adds a nice contrast.
There are a few samples available which were never made it to production like this shirt with fabric cutout pieces with tinted edges.
If you're looking for dress shirts - again there's plenty on the racks and also a few bins sitting on the ledge by the window.  If you can't find your size on the rack don't forget to check the bins! Simon Spurr button downs are $125 and SPURR button downs are $80.
The outerwear was plentiful - and both Simon Spurr and Spurr lines have great pieces to choose from.  My favorite was probably this beige cotton coat (Simon Spurr) with a coated panel going across the chest.  Beautifully constructed piece.
If your looking to score a winter coat at a discount, there's a few wool pieces and also a small rack of ties and one shelf of accessories (sunglasses, bags, shoes and hats).

In terms of pricing, when I arrived, no lists/prices were posted so the sales person was everyone's pricelist.  They were in the process of making copies to be distributed/put up so hopefully it will be easier to gauge pricepoints soon.  As a general rule, I would say that prices are running around 70% off of retail (Mr. Porter and Park & Bond both carry Simon Spurr while Bloomingdales carries SPURR if you want to check beforehand to get a better idea of prices will be).

As usual, the people working the sale are amazingly helpful and nice which is rare in the realm of sample sales.  Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the lines!  Based on previous sales, prices will likely get marked down towards the end of the sale.

Simon Spurr: Exits Own Company

This past weekend WWD announced that Simon Spurr exited his own label last Friday which he started back in 2006.  The designer was not at liberty to say what was going on.  All this just after his recent CFDA nomination for menswear designer of the year.  Ever since moving to New York, I've kept tabs on each of his collections - all of which sport well tailored pieces with a touch of British swagger thrown into an American label.  Hands down, he is one of my fave menswear designers out there.

On a side note, I'm always curious as to how emerging designers structure their companies.  Often times, lines are backed by a venture capitalist ("VC") who fund the operations of the company during its infancy stages with the hopes that the line will succeed and grow in the future.  In return for the initial cash forked over, the VCs take an ownership stake in the company which may seem all fine and dandy until someone gets booted from their own company.  More often than not, the problem lies in how the company was structured in the beginning. I'm not saying this is what happened here since nothing has been disclosed but you gotta wonder right?

Either way, I'm excited to see what Spurr comes up with next.  With stints at YSL, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren Purple/Black labels, and Tommy Hilfiger along with his host of accolades - he's bound to do something great.  Who knows, maybe he'll return  to his own label in the future - after all, Jil Sander is going back to...well Jil Sander!

Sample Sale Report: Simon Spurr/Spurr

Stopped by at the Simon Spurr/Spurr sample sale at lunch today. Even though the space is pretty small - there's plenty of space to move around and take your time. The staff are all super friendly and helpful and best of all there's no lineup! The sale is a bit on the pricier side but if you're a fan of the two lines - it's worth it! Simon Spurr has some of the best ready to wear pieces for men out there so I always look forward to this sale! There's one big mirror set up for you to look at and one corner of the room is partitioned off for you to try things on. It's small but it works.
The highlight of the sale is definitely the denim section - everything was going for $75 a pair - SPURR or Simon Spurr Label. Personally, these jeans have become a staple in my wardrobe so I snapped up a couple pairs in the pipe fit. In terms of sizing, there's a big range with lots of size 32. Popular sizes like 33 are still available but quickly diminishing. There was also a lonely box of denim/cords that was just $25.
Pricing was a bit higher than past sales but still 50-80% off what you would pay for at retail. The sale is heavy on outerwear with some amazing pea coats going for $700 (retails for $1,495) and army green parkas for $650. There were also some pieces from this past Spring collection that were a steal at just $50-$75 a piece. Sizing for the jackets runs the gamut but there were definitely more mediums available than any other size.
The above black heavy cotton coat is going for $350 (retails for $995) - I cringed a little when I saw this since I just bought this a couple weeks ago. On sale of course - but definitely nowhere near that price. I still love this jacket though...
Dress shirts from the SPURR line were $90 while button ups from the Simon Spurr label were $180. Last sale these were priced at $75 and $125 respectively and ran out uber quickly - there's definitely more styles and sizes available this time around. Leather pieces from the SPURR label hovered around $400 while leathers from the collection line were roughly $1,500.
Blazers range from $400-$800 and are mostly in size 38-40 - anything smaller or larger is few and far between. SPURR tuxedos were going for $800 and there were only a couple in size 40. Knitwear ranged from $125-$300 and again there was a range of sizing. Spurr T's were $30 and Simon Spurr V-neck T's were $90.

Although 11th Avenue seems a bit out of the way - it's definitely worth it if you're a fan of the two lines. Last sale, prices dropped by the end (I ended up scoring 2 pairs of jeans, a polo, and T for around $130) so hopefully the same holds true this time around.
