NYFW Fall 2013: Andrea Diodati

2013-02-13 20.46.00
On my last day of NYFW I was invited for a fashion show put on by The Sundance Channel's "All on the Line" star Andrea Diodati. It was a show inspired by vintage cheerleaders and the a white winter blizzard.  The collection titled "The White Fall" was a great way for me to close out fashion week because it was a nice getaway from the circus that Lincoln Center has become and just different from Milk Studios. The show was held offsite at the most unusual of locations - a church chapel.

Attendees sipped sparkling pink lemonade and snacked on white cotton candy while they chatted while sitting in the pews. Live musicians singing and playing the violin and fresh cut flowers set the mood.

Once the show began everyone hushed and models with white clouds of curly hair marched down the aisle. And sure to the name of the collection, there was definitely a bounty of white. Soft colors like pale blue, butter and peach were plentiful but there was also an injection of bolder colors like saffron yellow, rose, denim chambray, black and yellow plaid.

Skirts were both flouncy and pencil but all at or above the knee. Pants were slim for most part with 1 pair of flares thrown into the mix. Some styles played with sheerness mixed with shine, others with interesting panels and body contouring fit. Fabrications varied from the most delicate of chiffon to nubby tweeds. My personal favorite look was the textural sequin number paired with tweed vest.

While this show wasn't the most groundbreaking or cutting edge, there were certainly some fresh, wearable pieces with thoughtful detailing. I thoroughly enjoyed the way that the evening was executed as an experience where you were invited into the vision of the designer.

NYFW Fall 2013: Steven Alan

2013-02-12 09.46.19
If I had to describe the Steven Alan Fall 2013 collection in a sentence it would be, "Wearable comfortable basics done right with just a hint of quirk". This is a collection that I could see a thousand New Yorkers wearing on my daily commute.
2013-02-12 09.42.01
When it comes to the womenswear component there was a still small voice that took basics and styled them in a every signature Steven Alan kind of way. A shirtdress is layered over slim trousers with a turtleneck on top. A leather skirt is layered over a striped shirtdress with the shirttail peeking out at the bottom. A baggy shirt is only half tucked in to trousers with an elastic hem and topped with a jaunty scarf.

None of these pieces in their individual components would be so stand out, although very nice wardrobe building pieces. However when skillfully combined, you can see the Steven Alan woman emerge in the velvet, the nubby knits, the plaid, the windowpane and oxford shirting and in the leather.

My favorite looks are the leather skirt over striped shirtdress and the windowpane trousers and dress with trench.

While I am no menswear expert, I thought the men's presentation was very strong. Interesting subtle details like twisted plackets give a flair to the collection while soft wool, textured knits and fine wale corduroy give a lot of warmth.

Colors are muted in a range of greys, camel, olives and black with hits of burgundy and soft blue. Blazers and pants are cut on the shorter side for a informal look that is anything but sloppy. Layering throughout the collection reflected the womenswear and in a city like New York, just makes sense.

Now Wearing…

Erin Style Diary (2)
It's been a while since I've posted an outfit but since it was Fashion Week, I got to borrow a couple pieces from my friends at AM:PR to create my look. It was the day after the snowstorm and honestly I didn't know how I was going to stay warm and dry so I decided to layer up and wear rubber boots because nothing can make me more miserable quicker than cold wet feet.
