Sample Sale Report: Botkier November 2012

IMAG0014IMAG0015IMAG0016
Last night I stopped by the Botkier Friends and Family sample sale to moderate crowds and plenty of bags as low as $50. I have been a longtime fan of Botkier handbags thanks to their lightweight nature and great design. I've witnessed the transformation from slouchy downtown cool to a simpler and more refined elegance and I'm still a fan.

Anyways as for the sale, it was held at Botkier headquarters in the showroom itself so it is a much smaller space than previous sample sales. The sale is set up into 2 rooms with many shelves of merchandise in addition to tables. The first room contained mostly stock while the back room held the one-offs and samples. Here I spotted mini pouchettes in metallic and camo print for just $50!

In the sample section I also spotted a couple of my personal faves at reduced prices including the Eden Mini Satchel in pretty pastel color block for $125, the Valentina shoulder for $100 in pewter and the Valentina Satchel in oxblood for $150.  I personally love shopping this section for a bit of a discount and a chance to pick up a bag in a unique color that may have never been manufactured.

As for the stock, quilted wallets are $50, Valentina wallets and coin purses are $85 while you can even snag a crossbody for $85.

Smaller bags like the Calie envelope clutch and Calie/Carter crossbody as well as the Valentina shoulder are now $110. A great price for a rainbow of lovely little purses. Certain shades of the Valentina shoulder are $125 as well as the Venice crossbody and slightly larger bags like the Scout Crossbody, Marlow Crossbody and Kenya Satchel.

For $150 you can score the Lucy crossbody or Jackson small satchel while $175 will get you a Lucy Shoulder or Eden Satchel or Venice Satchel. You can also snag your share of Rae convertible clutches, Aldyn Satchels and Valentina Satchels in fashion shades for $175.

On the top end of the spectrum $195 will score you a Misha clutch, Blair  satchel and Eden small satchel in black. For $230 you can grab a Kent shoulder, Brando satchel and Adele satchel as well as more Valentina's in classic colors as well as textured lizard look.  The sale tops out at $295 for the Blair satchel and Eden Satchel in black.

So to note, in general the larger the bag, the higher the price in most cases. If you are looking for classic/basic colors expect to pay a little more. I personally think that in general most merchandise is priced very well at $175 or below compared to previous sample sales. Shop early for the best selection - especially if you're aiming for a sample although past experience tells me that they re-stock these throughout the sale so you never know what you're going to get.

On a side note this sale also had shoes, but they were a bit tangled together on a table and I didn't get a great look at them except to note that the couple pairs I picked up just happened to be size 37 :)

Now Riding...

Photos by James Rand

Yes, I ride a moped or what some call a "mini motorcycle with pedals".  A few months ago, with the help of my good friend Mikey I bought a moped!  It's a vintage 1970s Pinto, manufactured by Puch and sold at JCPenney.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to mechanics.  I'm constantly asking Mikey questions and searching forums for answers, and it's quite fun and rewarding.  The moped community in Chicago is really friendly, and a shop opened up on Western this past summer - MOPED!

You can see my moped in action in this sweet video by Leo Burnett featuring my friend Roberto.  Right around 2:49, you'll see my friends flying by and a nice long shot of the city... then a quick appearance by yours truly.

Moped - vintage 1970s JCPenney Pinto
Gold jacket - Secondhand
Floral helmet - AGV
Color block dress - Pixie Market
Boots - Justin Roper

Oh you know, just me and the gang.  While James was snapping pictures, these kids asked if they could jump in the photo and there you have it.

Fashion Girls for Humanity: Sale for Sandy

Back in 2011 when the earthquake hit Japan, Fashion Girls for Humanity was formed in an effort raise funds for disaster relief.  The Girls are back at it again but this time the cause hits much closer to home.  We've all seen the news, heard our co-workers stories and now here's our chance to help out.  Over 100 designers and 100 rolling racks are going to be up for grabs at this sale with proceeds going towards hurricane relief efforts. The Girls raised over $400,000 since 2011 and they are comprised entirely of volunteers which is pretty amazing.

Admission is just $5 ($50 for early admission) and tickets can be purchased in advance here.  If you can't make it out to the sale, online donations are also being accepted here.

Honestly, I've heard people gripe about the pricing at this sale (it is on the steep end) but please understand that really is going towards an amazing cause and that those comments are completely out of line.  Please help show your support for the city we all love and call home.

Who:  Fashion Girls for Humanity
What: Discounts on over 100 designers (for a full listing of participating designers, click here).  Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
When: Nov 27-28, 2012.  Nov 27 (Early admission is 11am-12pm), general admission 12pm-8pm.  Wed 11am-7pm.
Where: The Bowery Hotel. 4 E 3rd St (b/n Bowery and 2nd Ave)

Joe Fresh: À la Canada

I'm visiting my hometown Toronto for the holidays and wanted to show you guys/gals the humble beginnings of Joe Fresh.  With their flagship store on 5th and 42nd and another spot in Flatiron, I forget sometimes that it all began with food...

Loblaws (a grocery chain in Canada), is where the brand got it's first retail outlet - along with the dairy aisle.  Even though their US counterparts only have freestanding retail outlets, the Joe Fresh line is still primarily sold inside the grocery store chains here in Canada.
The concept is pretty smart - everyone needs food and everyone needs clothes.  I stopped by my local Loblaws today to pick up a few essentials:  Milk -> check, eggs -> check, bread -> check, chips -> check, wool sweater for $19 -> check!
While the merchandise is a bit different from what's available in the NY stores (there were no cashmere sweaters available for example), it's still a fun and interesting experience - I definitely recommend it if you ever make it to Canada for a visit!  Whether you're looking to fix dinner, grabbing a sequinned skirt for a party or a sweater to keep you warm, Joe Fresh has you covered.  They also have a huge kids/baby section with some uber cute things (what 2 year old doesn't need reptile slippers!) which isn't available in the US.
On a side note - if you ever do make it to Canada and a Loblaws store, be sure to pick up a bag of Dill Pickle chips. They. Are. Ahhhhmaazzinng.

H&M X Maison Martin Margiela: Menswear

Along with Erin - I ended up hitting the presale event at Columbus Circle last night.  The men's section was no where near as frantic as the women's (thank God it was on a different floor) but it was still bustling.   From what I could see, shoppers were definitely more selective with their choices - my guess is due to the heftier pricepoints.  Hopefully this will act as a deterrant for the infinite number of douchebags who try and turn a quick buck through reselling the items on eBay.

Apparently there are still plenty of shit for brains people out there who are already reselling on eBay.  Take "iliveforlanvin" for example who is selling the high-top sneakers for $599 + $15 shipping ($129 in store).  For your sake "iliveforlanvin", I hope I never meet you as I am guaranteed to go batshit crazy on your ass.  At least you have the decency of keeping your shipping charges to a minimum when trying to bank over 300% profit on a post production, post retailed good. How very noble of you.

That's enough ranting for now on dumbass eBay resellers - back to the clothes!
My favorite of the lot was this wool grey blazer with fused lapels.  It's clean cut, and when you look at it, the detailing is subtle and very Margiela. It's probably one of the most wearable items and at $149 won't break the bank.

In terms of tops, the sweaters seemed to be more popular with shoppers that night.  The staff at the H&M store did a great job of restocking items so it looked like lots of people got what they wanted which was nice.  Shoes - and the sneakers in particular - seemed to fly off the shelves the quickest.  So if that's what your gunning for, I suggest trying to go for those first!
Pants seemed to fare the least well with shoppers - they are definitely not your typical run of the mill slacks so if you're eyeing a pair hopefully you'll be able to snag one in your size.
I thought the most fun looking piece was the disco blazer - a perfect option for a New Year's party!

If you plan on stopping by/are in line hope you get what you're looking for!
